Origins

In this project I have developed my research and practice further as I have looked deeper into different artist and other methods of working. In my artist research I looked into the use of materials and how I could connect to them. Throughout my research I made connections between what I did in the workshops and the use of different materials; for example the ‘finding forms’ workshop was to do with everyday materials and what we could create using these materials. This really inspired me to look into other artists that work with everyday materials.
Looking back through this project, there are many ideas that inspired me to think about how I could use this in the future as well as how I could adapt this to work for my practice. The way I selected certain ideas was to experiment with them all. For example when we got inducted to the laser cutter I was more concerned about the materials I could use than what design was going to be cut out of the material. When I did my laser cutting I had to make practical decisions on the materials I was going to use because of health and safety cautions. As well as health and safety to consider, some of the materials I originally chose, the laser would not cut through. These experiments and the experiences I had doing them, will improve my practice in the future because I now know that I will have to consider my ideas and see how far I can push them.
The important self-discoveries I have made during this project are that I must keep an open mind about using machines and technology to create things in my practice. This is because the technology we have available to us, is so much quicker now e.g. it can repeat the same shape for you over and over again so that you don’t have to do each one by hand. Also I have found that by talking to others and having feedback in lessons and workshops my work has improved as this builds up more research for potential future projects.
During this project, I have realised that I need to be braver when it comes to my work and to not be so scared to try different ways of working. This has made me consider how I will create my work in the future as well as not being scared to try my practice on a huge scale outside the studio.
I haven’t yet found an artist or designer that uses the exact same context as me because I still haven’t found out what my context is. Up until now, I have just been experimenting with different materials. In the future I want to find out what my context is about because everyone else has one.
I am good at managing my time in the studio, I’m always in on time and stay until my work is finished or I have done the parts I needed to do. However, I find it difficult to work independently at home because I am not in the same environment as I am in the studio which makes me feel like I’m not using the time I have wisely. Therefore I think I would work so much better if we were in the studio all week.
I need to think more critical about my work and use contextual resources because I think if I use these it will help me find out more about my practice and what the context of my work is about. This is what I will be taking in to account in my future practice.

Experimenting Outside

Ideas

By researching different artists and designers, I was inspired to create some installations, myself, outside the studio. The materials I chose to work with were: tights, plastic sheets, table cloths and salt. I went outside to create the installations. I really enjoyed creating these installations because I persuaded my flat mates to interact with my work which made it more fun. Every time they touched my artwork, it would change into a different shape which was very interesting to see.

Thinking bigger!

After creating all these little experiments I knew that I had to create something bigger, using more materials. So I did more research into artists that I could relate to, some of which used their materials outside.

Second feedback

In this feedback session I showed the new research that I did and explained that I didn’t have any idea about which target market I am creating my work for. All that I was sure of was that I just had to keep experimenting and researching further artists that I can relate to. Within the feedback session, the group said that I still need to experiment further, using different materials as well as thinking of other ways that I could use the materials I already used. They also suggested that I use the laser cutter to create different shapes. The material I have already used, which I liked the most, was the nappy bags because I enjoyed manipulating them and their colours were really bright.

Feedback

In my group tutorials I was given some really good feedback and advice about how I could improve my work. They have helped me realise what I needed to do, experiment more. My peers said I have a good talent for drawing with other materials, not just pens and pencils. They also suggested that I should create bigger installations outside of my sketch book. I was able to come up with multiple ideas about where I could see my work. I just have to be braver!

Artist research

When I search for artists, I look for artists that use a range of different media and materials. I tend to use Tumblr for a lot of my research because I am always looking for new ways of working. Once I have found an artists that I like, I research into them more to see what other materials they use. Another method I like to use, is to find an artist who really inspires me and use every day materials to create something similar to what they have done, but in my own way. Then I collect all of my ideas together and put them into my sketch book. Some of the artist I really enjoyed researching were Anya Gallaccio, Red on Green: the life and death of 10,000 roses, MyeongBeom Kim , Nick Croft and Michaela MacLeod - Pink Punch Amie Dicke.

Manipulation

Working with collage made me think more about what other materials I could use. The materials I chose to manipulate we colour plastic bags.

Drawing Day

I enjoyed ‘drawing day’ because I was able to manipulate paper. However before I could manipulate the paper, I can to print and colour it beforehand. I used neon paints and patterns on my paper, before I manipulated them into the shoes. Within this ‘drawing day’ I was more concerned about how I manipulated them. This makes me reflect on my past workshops where I have wanted to carry on manipulating paper and other materials. Also this has made me think of other things I could create and relate things to.
